Chadwick Tromp Picks Free Center

A hunter Chadwick Trump selected free agency over the weekend, according to MLB.com’s career log. He was assigned to work by the Braves on Thursday when they acquired him Austin Wynns in small trade with Angels.

Tromp spent several weeks on the active roster in Atlanta. He was called in mid-May on time Drake Baldwin he went on the injured list. Atlanta is lost Sean Murphy and Baldwin in quick succession shortly after the pinch Jonah Heim out of the list. Murphy had returned from hip surgery but suffered a broken finger soon after. Baldwin then drained his oblique, leaving the Braves with a duo of short hits for Tromp and Sandy León.

Now it’s León and Wynns. Tromp started six of his 12 appearances in his short MLB tenure. He went 5-25 in two. Tromp did not walk and struck out seven times. He was charged with a few turnovers and a passed ball while throwing out one of six steal attempts. Tromp has now played at the highest level for the past seven seasons. He has yet to surpass 64 plate appearances as a rookie with the Giants in 2020.

The Braves like Tromp’s exit options enough as a third or fourth baseman to give him MLB time each year through 2022. It wouldn’t be surprising if they wanted to sign him back to a minor league deal despite his .169/.253/.325 showing over 24 games with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Atlanta has light in the depth of a healthy organization. Jair Camargo and 25 years old Adam Zebrowski there is the current catching tandem of the Stripers, which has placed Maverick Handley on the injured list last week. Handley is on the 40-man roster. Camargo and Zebrowski, who have a combined five games of MLB experience, are absent. Baldwin could be back in the next two weeks but Murphy will likely be out beyond the All-Star Break.
