AL West Notes: Miller, Castillo, Langford, Rangers, Moore

Bryce Miller it will start again Luis Castillo will also be a piggyback pitcher for Sailors on Sunday, but the team will adopt a six-man rotation, writes Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. Friday’s game against the Diamondbacks marks the start of 16 games in 17 days for the Mariners, so going back to a six-man rotation will help keep the entire pitching staff fresh. The rotation will be reviewed on June 15 (Seattle’s next day), and sticking with the six-man format could be an option, if the M’s can’t use two starters in a piggyback set-up again.

Simply putting the schedule on hold for the next few weeks is a good move for the Mariners, as both Miller and Castillo were unhappy with what they felt was a lack of communication with the club. Manager Dan Wilson, pitching coach Pete Woodworth, president of baseball Jerry Dipoto, and GM Justin Hollander all talked to the two right-handers this week and now everyone seems to be “on the same page,” as Miller put it. Emerson HancockA breakout season has given Seattle six effective starters and the difficulty of managing everyone’s workload, though in the big picture, there’s no such thing as great pitching for a team hoping to make an even deeper playoff run.

More from the AL West…

  • Wyatt Langford is expected to begin Triple-A rehab work today. I The guards The linebacker hasn’t played since April 21 because of a strained right arm, and his stay on the 10-day injured list was longer than expected since Langford’s previous major league effort was halted by arm discomfort. Considered by many to be a true breakout candidate in 2026, Langford got off to a slow start prior to his IL placement, hitting just .238/.274/.363 in his first 84 plate appearances.
  • In addition to Langford, The guards Manager Skip Schumaker also gave reporters (including the Dallas Morning News’ Shawn McFarland) updates on two other sidelined players. Corey Seager set for live batting practice today, a week after BP’s previous session was postponed due to more pain in the stopper’s ailing back. “Running was probably the main thing” catching Seager, Schumaker said, through Seager he was able to play catch and change. Josh Smith he has rejoined the Rangers and resumed baseball activities, although as with Seager, there is no timetable for when Smith might return to the Texas roster. A right glute strain sent Smith to the 10-day IL on May 4, but what was originally expected to be a short IL stint was extended by wrist pain, then a more serious case of viral meningitis that led to a hospitalization.
  • The old one Angels high hopes Christian Moore he played only second base in his first two professional seasons but split his time between second and third base this season at Triple-A Salt Lake. Moore now gets to look at an entirely new position of left field, writes Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Angels assistant GM Joey Prebynski said Moore will be used at all three positions, and “for us, it’s about continuing to get him reps out there, seeing balls come off the bat in left field.” No team in baseball got less from their lefties in 2026 than the Angels, as Josh LoweThe struggles (and demotion to Triple-A) were a big reason why the position was a black hole for the team. With Oswald Peraza/Adam Frazier platoon at second base, Moore’s next trip to the majors could see him get more time away from his natural habitat. Moore made his MLB debut last season and hit just .198/.284/.370 over 184 PA, but he has continued to crush Triple-A pitches in his second year at the minor league level, hitting .282/.439/.481 to show in 171 PA for Salt Lake in 2026.
