Keep your club in flight and hit better irons with this simple drill

All great golfers share at least one characteristic: They live very close to being on the plane. For many weekend warriors, that’s a challenge – but this simple exercise can help.
All you need is a club, a ball and two tees. Set up normally, and place one tee on the ground about a foot behind the ball. Next, attach another tee to the butt end of your grip so it sticks out a few inches.

As you begin to go back, stop where your lead arm is parallel to the ground. (Coaches call this position P3.) The tee in the grip should face directly downfield. If the butt of the grip points off the tee (far side), you’ll know the club is too shallow. If it points inside the tee (closer to the side), it is too steep.
Train yourself to point the butt of the catch at that target spot behind the ball every time you get to P3. When it does, you’ll know you’re on the plane and in the perfect position to score a solid goal.
