The Padres’ Troubles Are Growing

The past few weeks have not been kind to the Padres. They are now on a season-high five-game losing streak after sweeping tonight’s series finale in Philadelphia. It’s the third four-game skid of the season and the second in as many weeks, as they’ve dropped nine of 10.

Six of those came at the hands of the Phillies, who turned their season around after a brutal April turnover and oversight. Obviously Philadelphia deserves credit for that, but San Diego’s recent results have only exacerbated the problems that existed even when winning games. They won 18 of 25 games in April despite not being the best and one of the weakest teams in the National League. List shortages have started to appear.

San Diego’s success early in the season means they are in the playoffs. They are 32-29 and in the thick of the Wild Card race. Two-thirds of the National League is over .500, so a team’s ranking can move quickly.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wrote about the Padres’ struggles this morning, noting that baseball president AJ Preller has never shied away from big deals at the deadline. Unless they get into trouble in the next two months, they will likely be tied to a number of big names on the trade market. The needs are piling up.
