Jannik Sinner faced an unusual opponent in Elmer Moller on Sunday at the Mutua Madrid Open, but there was nothing unusual about the way the Italian cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 third-round victory at the ATP Masters 1000 clay court event.
The No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings proved consistent and clinical against No. 169-ranked Dane Moller, who was facing a Top 10 player for the first time. Sinner powered his way to a one-hour, 17-minute third-round victory inside Manolo Santana Stadium to extend his Masters 1000 winning streak to 24 games, the fourth-longest in series history (since 1990).

Now 26-2 this season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Sinner is just four wins away from becoming the first player to win back-to-back Masters 1000 crowns. The 24-year-old, looking to build on his recent titles in Paris (last November), Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo, will face either Cameron Norrie or Thiago Agustin Tirante in the quarter-finals in Madrid.
“I tried to stay calm and work well in the important moments,” Sinner said in his courtroom interview. “I think that was the key today. We didn’t have a lot of rhythm, so I tried to stay together. Let’s see what comes in the next round.”
Sinner quickly began his first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with 22-year-old Moller. The Italian reeled off four straight games from 1-1 in the first set and, although Moller forced a rare break from Sinner in the seventh game, the World No. 1 got a third break to take the set.
Moller took a sick time out at 2-5, while receiving treatment for his abdominal area at the tournament physio, but the Dane continued to compete admirably in the second half of the match. Moller found a rhythm especially in his forehand, his dominant shot that climbed into the World Top 100, in the second set.
That wasn’t enough to deny Sinner an outright victory, however. Moller delivered costly double faults from deuce at 2-3 to give the World No. 1 decisive break, and Sinner made no mistake from there to wrap up the win where he converted four of his nine break points.
Sinner’s Top-10 Italian Lorenzo Musetti also advanced to the fourth round on Sunday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Tallon Griekspoor. Six-handed Musetti broke Griekspoor twice in each set to return to the round of 16 in Madrid for the third time.
Musetti’s next player at Caja Magica will be Jiri Lehecka at number 11, who beat Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-2. Lehecka is a semifinalist in Madrid, having reached that stage in 2024, and will enter Tuesday’s fourth-round meeting with a 2-1 lead in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Musetti. However, Musetti won the previous first meeting on clay, at the 2025 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
