Spotify apparently doesn’t have a strong system for labeling AI-generated music

There’s a quiet concern spreading over music streaming – and Spotify, the platform more than half a billion people rely on to sing their way through life, is doing very little about it. AI-generated tracks are flooding streaming platforms at a pace that would have felt dystopian five years ago. Tens of thousands of them, every day, enter the same playlists and recommendation queue as your favorite artists. And most listeners wouldn’t know the difference – research shows that most can’t tell them apart by blind listening.
The listeners are solving for themselves
So when people start noticing something sad, they start doing something about it themselves. One developer in Germany was so fed up with AI tracks allegedly bleeding from his Spotify playlist that he created his own tool to flag and block them. You uploaded it online. Hundreds of people downloaded it immediately. That alone should tell Spotify something.
But Spotify’s response so far has been a lower-than-actual figure. The platform recently launched a feature that shows the use of AI in song credits – but only if the artist actually approves of it. Voluntary self-disclosure to persons who may fear occupational injury by doing so. That is not obvious; that’s just the way it looks.
Deezer, on the other hand, has already deployed its discovery technology and started tagging and filtering AI-generated content in its recommendations. Apple Music is at least moving toward mandatory disclosure. Spotify, the biggest platform in the room, is still standing at the door, saying it’s complicated.
Yes, it’s complicated but that’s no excuse
The line between AI-assisted and AI-produced is definitely blurred. An artist using AI to help write a verse is a different conversation than someone who wrote the material and uploaded the result. Experts in the field agree that this is not a clean binary. Misnaming a human artist as an AI would be a grave mistake with real consequences.

But here’s the thing – no one is asking for perfection. What the listeners want, what the musicians deserve, is the beginning. Label fully AI generated objects, check the gray area scale from there. The argument that it’s too hard to do anything, so we shouldn’t do anything, is starting to sound like a good excuse. Because there is money in this place. AI-produced music is cheaper to produce, potentially cheaper to use, and doesn’t require the same benefits as human artists. The motivational structures here are invisible. If the world’s largest music platform refuses to ask too many questions about where its content comes from, it’s worth asking yourself why.
The problem of trust in practice
There’s a version of this story where Spotify ends up being right — where transparency tools, industry standards, and platform accountability go hand in hand with technology. That future may be closer than it seems, with regulatory pressure building and music industry standards bodies moving closer to disclosure plans. But right now, in the meantime, listeners are downloading third-party blockers and double-checking their playlists, as if they’re reading the fine print on a suspicious contract. That is not the relationship a platform should seek with its audience. Spotify has built its entire brand on helping people find the music they love. If people stop trusting what they hear, that kind of means very little.
