Motorola’s Latest Family of Razrs Includes Its First Book-Style Foldable

While we don’t expect new foldable phones from Samsung and Google until later this summer and fall, Motorola is getting the ball rolling early with an updated portfolio of bendy Razr handsets, including its first book-style foldable.
The Motorola Razr Fold was first announced at CES before being shown off again at MWC last month, so it’s not like its arrival is a complete surprise. But for fans of big foldable phones in the US – where we don’t get as many options as people in parts of Europe and Asia – this device has some interesting features that aren’t available on its closest competitors. The most notable difference is the built-in stylus support, which was a long-standing addition to Samsung’s premium folds until the company dropped it last year on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. That said, the Moto Pen Ultra doesn’t come bundled with the phone, so if you want the option to draw and take notes by hand, you’ll need to buy it separately for $100.
The Razr Fold is Motorola’s first foldable style book
Besides, the Razr Fold has the biggest and brightest screens of any folding book model on sale today. Its 6.6-inch external display reaches up to 6,000 nits, while its 8.1-inch flexible internal screen beats out the larger 8-inch panels on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Z Fold 7 and offers even greater brightness (up to 6,200 nits). The Razr Fold also sports the largest battery of the three thanks to its 6,000mAh silicon-carbon power pack and super-fast charging, coming in at 80 watts wired or 50 watts wireless. Although it’s similar to its stylus, you’ll need to shell out more for the right power adapters, as Motorola relies on a proprietary protocol to enable high charging speeds.
When it comes to performance, the Razr Fold should be more powerful thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, while Moto says the phone’s 50MP camera is the best in its class. However, since the Razr Fold measures 4.6mm thick when closed, it’s still not as thin as the Z Fold 7 (4.2mm). Finally, with a price of $ 1,900, it is not exactly cheap, but the Razr Fold is actually a touch less expensive than the same mentioned models of its two main competitors. Currently, the 512GB Pixel 10 Pro Fold costs $1,919 and the 512GB Z Fold 7 costs $2,200.
As for the new Flip-style Razrs, Motorola has once again split the family into three different models. The $1,500 Razr Ultra is more premium and features a 4-inch external display and a large 7-inch flexible screen with 5,000 luminance. Motorola says the Ultra is the world’s first flexible phone to feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 while also featuring the largest battery in its category at 5,000mAh. Working and charging should also be fun, with the phone featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and 68-watt wired charging.
The Razr+ sits at the center of Motorola’s new lineup
In the middle of the family is the Razr+, which starts at $1,100 and has a super-slim 6.9-inch screen. Like all flip-style models in the family, the Razr+ comes with 15-watt wireless charging and Moto AI, which is a host of automated apps and features including Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. However, its performance, battery size and charging speed took a bit of a hit as the Razr+ is based on a Snapdragon 8s gen 3 chip with a 4,500mAh cell and 45-watt wired charging.
Motorola’s base Razr starts under $1,000
Finally, starting at $800, the basic Razr is the most affordable of the three. Its external screen is even smaller at 3.6 inches (though the internal is still 6.9 inches) and it has a MediaTek Dimensity 7450X chip instead of something from Qualcomm. Wireless charging has also been reduced to just 30 watts, although on the bright side, its battery is a touch bigger than its mid-range sibling at 4,800mAh.
Even though the Razr’s base specs aren’t very impressive, it’s hard to be upset with a versatile flip phone that starts well under $1,000, especially in this economy. And with Motorola adding a book-style folding to the mix, it sounds like there’s an option for just about everyone.
The new Razr family will be available for pre-order starting May 14 directly from Motorola and retailers like Best Buy, ahead of its official on-sale date of May 21.
