TaylorMade’s Adrian Rietveld on what it’s like to pitch to Rory McIlroy

Listen, if you’ve spent any time around a touring truck, you know that the distance between a “good” and a “famous” driver is measured in fractions of millimeters… and a lot of sweat. I recently sat down with TaylorMade’s Senior Tour Manager, Adrian Rietveld, for an episode of Visit Confirmedand what he has to say about Rory McIlroy’s switch to Qi4D is the kind of gear head gold that keeps me up at night.
Rietveld, aka AD, has been a close friend since my days back at WRX, and watching him evolve from new US hire from DP World Tour to Alpha fitter on the TaylorMade truck has been one of my proudest experiences in the industry. There’s nothing better than getting those texts at the start of the season when they’re successful with a player or a new piece of technology. Passion and dedication are inspiring; Honestly, most of what I know about this game comes from this guy and Callaway’s Kellen Watson. Podcasts like this make me truly grateful again.

Precision at 190 MPH: The ‘Rory Robot’
Adrian began pulling back the curtain on the R&D process at The Kingdom. Imagine a robot measured directly on Rory’s delivery: 5 degrees up, 180 high to 190 mph ball speed. That’s not just a machine; it is an imitation of a natural phenomenon.
The tension in the room was palpable. Adrian noted that at those speeds, a face angle difference of just 0.2 degrees, a literal hair’s breadth, would put the ball out of range. It gives you a fun appreciation of how precise Rory has to be with his hands. When the robot finally started spitting out that signature Rory jet, Adrian knew they were close. But “closure” doesn’t mean blue jackets.
Sweet Spot is 2400 RPM
For years, “Rory’s Number” was 2200 to 2400 RPM of spin. This is where he holds the breath. The challenge with the new Qi4D structure was to strengthen the standard deviation without losing the integrity of the plane.
Adrian described a session at The Bears Club where the data was almost unbelievable. We’re talking a ball speed of 190 mph with a deviation of about 150 RPM over most shots. That is pure, unadulterated consistency. It’s the kind of performance that makes a guy like Rory put his old player down and never look back. In fact, Adrian said that when Rory hit the final Qi4D, he never picked up his previous driver again.
TaylorMade Qi4D Custom Driver
EFFECTIVELY DESIGNED The redesigned head profile increases ball speed thanks to improved aerodynamics created by advanced simulation. FACE FOR DISTANCE The 60x Carbon Twist Face™ is a technological cornerstone that offers weight savings, incredible ball speed and more consistency compared to titanium faces. ADJUSTABLE OPERATION 4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for improved flight. TOUR PROVEN TECHNOLOGIES The new and improved Speed Pocket™ cutter protects ball speed and reduces spin on low-face shots. Advanced CAD modeling creates a clean and powerful sounding design, the foundation of TaylorMade driver performance. Multi-Material Construction allows engineers to place weight in the head areas which maximizes performance, speed, and stability.

The ‘Harry Diamond’ Effect
One of the best things Adrian dropped was about the visual evolution of the club. When they were looking at the finished parts at Wentworth, Rory’s artist, Harry Diamond, made an important observation. Harry pointed out that while the previous prototype was clean, the sales-oriented Qi10 had a different top line on the crown.
Rory was looking at both, and Harry, who knew Rory’s eye better than anyone, helped bridge that gap. Adrian realized it was easier to just bring both versions to The Bears Club for the final game. Having Harry involved isn’t just carrying the bag; it’s about that second set of eyes that ensures a player not only sees good numbers, but sees a look that inspires complete confidence.

Designer of the Top of the Pyramid
Beyond the nuts and bolts of a single driver, you have to look at how Rietveld has run TaylorMade. It is unprecedented. We’re talking about a guy who has bagged three of the world’s best athletes at the same time, a “Fitter Triple Crown” that many in the industry can only dream of.
His record is not limited to longevity; it’s about stability. Adrian has overseen a period in which TaylorMade athletes have captured seven of the last nine Masters titles. Whether it’s Scottie Scheffler’s unparalleled hitting, Tommy Fleetwood’s unique metal needs, or Rory’s pursuit of a career Grand Slam, Adrian is a common value. He’s gone from “expert driver” to master of every bag, proving that the secret sauce at TaylorMade isn’t just the carbon, it’s the people who know how to tune it.
Emotional Communication
What I love about Adrian is that he is not just a “numbers guy.” Taking this personally. He talked about the stress of “pursuing the Masters” and the 10 years of work leading up to Rory’s recent success.
You can have all the robots and Trackman data in the world, but at the end of the day, it’s about the player looking down at a piece of carbon and feeling like he was “born with a driver in his hand.” Rory’s straight Qi4D setup, with that gray face and top line that Harry helped dial in, was a joint build that started as a shell at East Lake and ended up with a green jacket.
