The timeline for Luka Doncic’s return remains unclear as the Lakers make the second round

The Los Angeles Lakers are heading deeper into the postseason, but their biggest question remains, when will Luka Doncic return?

The star guard continues to recover from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, and while progress is being made, his first appearance for the second-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder has already been called off.

“I was told right now, Luka Doncic will be out to start this series against the Oklahoma City Thunder,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said during the pregame segment. “The Lakers are evaluating Doncic week-to-week with that Grade 2 strain. So he’s out about a month right now. Another source told me a few days ago, it’s still a slow road for Doncic’s recovery. He’s working a lot on the court, but he hasn’t been running or working out yet.”

That update paints a cautious picture for Los Angeles, especially given how critical Doncic has been to their success this season.

The team closed out the regular season strong after scoring a lot of goals, finishing with 53 wins, but now faces a rested Thunder team without its primary offensive engine.

For the Lakers, this situation is more than just one series. Doncic has dealt with hamstring issues all year, and the organization seems unwilling to return him to action and risk a long-term injury.

Even in a top playoff spot, protecting their franchise cornerstone remains a priority.

It’s still possible Doncic could rejoin the lineup later in the series if Los Angeles can stay competitive early. However, against a Thunder team coming off a sweep and coming in with significant rest, that task becomes more difficult.

Despite the uncertainty, the Lakers’ postseason run thus far has already exceeded expectations in some ways.
