Microsoft’s new Xbox chief Asha Sharma is revamping the leadership team

Microsoft Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees in a memo Tuesday that she is appointing new leaders, as the software company looks to restore its video game division to growth.

Sharma moved to Xbox in February as games chief Phil Spencer announced his retirement. He came to Microsoft in 2024 after working hard Meta again Instacartbecoming a product manager on the CoreAI engineering team working on GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio Code and other developer tools.

“We need to change the way we operate and the way we organize our universe,” Sharma wrote in a memo seen by CNBC. “Right now, it’s very difficult to send an impact quickly. We spend too much time inside the public sector, and we don’t have the depth we need in some of the fundamentals.”

Last week, Microsoft reported its fourth decline in gaming revenue in the past six quarters. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, said that the company is trying to win back fans of the Xbox, the Bing search engine and other consumer goods.

Xbox “brings new leaders with consumer technology and technology that we don’t have yet,” he wrote in the memo.

Four of those leaders are from the CoreAI team, which has moved on with Sharma.

Jared Palmer, formerly vice president of product for CoreAI and senior vice president of Microsoft subsidiary GitHub, will join Xbox as a member of the technical staff to work on product, engineering, developer tools and infrastructure. He will also pay attention to matters of “taste,” writes Sharma. Palmer arrived at Microsoft in October after serving as vice president of intelligence app hosting service Vercel, which bought its first Turborepo in 2021.

Tim Allen, CoreAI’s vice president of design and GitHub’s senior vice president of architecture and research, will also be moving to Xbox and will lead design. Allen came to Microsoft in November after spending nearly four years as head of architecture and research at Instacart.

Jonathan McKay, former director of Meta and head of growth for ChatGPT at OpenAI, will become Xbox’s head of growth after holding this title in the CoreAI team.

Evan Chaki, general manager at CoreAI, will lead a distributed engineering team that will focus on streamlining development and eliminating repetitive work.

David Schloss, Instacart’s senior director of product and growth, will manage the Xbox subscription and cloud business.

Kevin Gammill, corporate vice president of Xbox user experience, game development and publishing platforms, will step down. Roanne Sones, vice president of the Xbox devices business and ecosystem, will take a leave of absence later this summer and will later become an Xbox consultant. Sones and Gammill each spent 24 years at Microsoft.
