Is a stiff Fujikura shaft really right for this 49 year old? Yes

In the world of professional gear, finding the right shaft isn’t about chasing a brand name — it’s about matching the engine to the driver (player).
The shaft is the main timing mechanism that sets the feel and delivery of the club against the ball. Currently, Fujikura is riding a wave of history, as the Ventus Black has been the winning shaft of choice for the last five consecutive majors on the Men’s Tour. It has become the ultimate choice for the best players in the world.
If anyone has seen my act on Instagram or YouTube, you know I have a ton of moving parts. I slide it in, get on top of it a little, then jump a little out of the way to get it out. Almost a fading pattern while trying to hit a draw. It’s bad, but I’ve played some good (albeit inconsistent) golf over the past few years. In my experience, it’s really difficult and – most of the time – heavy parts have worked for me.
I judge all shafts by my ability to hit the center of the club. The Ventus Black with VeloCore+ has not failed there, and beyond, it has gone from driver to driver. In the middle Fully Appropriateall my installationswhich have led to the Ventus Black VeloCore+. I’ve never had that happen before.
Today, with the recent launch of the new TR line with Velo+, I wanted to see if I could improve on that performance.
Maximizing Face-Center Contact
The most important metric in any equity is claim consistency. As fitness guru Ryan Massicci said, “If you’re not hitting the middle of the face, you’re not increasing the speed of the ball.”
While the standard Ventus Black VeloCore+ offers excellent stability, the VeloCore+ upgrade—which uses a redesigned multi-biased core—enhances dispersion even more. During the test, I recorded a smash factor of 1.51 (!!). Because the technology reduces the “twisting” of the head during transition and impact, I found the center of the face more often, which allows us to focus on gaining speed rather than correcting a mistake.
Structural Stability in the Bearing with TR Velo+
My “jumping” motion on the ball puts a lot of stress on the grip part. While testing the TR Blue, I felt the shaft kick in early, causing me to lose the feel of the head position. TR offered similar struggles with that “kick” that comes below. In my case, it’s another “object/variable” to handle. No thanks.
TR Black addresses this directly by incorporating Spread Tow carbon fiber into the handlebar. This increases the torsional stiffness that aggressive pull-down motions require. Provides stability for swinging out to the right – eliminates miss to the right – without the shaft feeling dead. It’s a tighter feel that allows for more speed without fear of the shaft “timing out” or lagging behind my hands. Admittedly, the head setup is a HUGE part of this; everything must be done.
Raising the Working Floor
Filing isn’t just about driving your best; it’s about the worst of you. Like I said ad nauseam, I want a TOP floor.
During the session, I hit several shots on the top of the heel. Usually, that’s a shot that misfires and loses significant distance. However, the TR Black VeloCore+ kept those misses online remarkably, with some finishing only inches from the target line. By reinforcing the spread of off-center hits, the shaft ensures that even if I swing my “bad,” a poor strike still keeps me in the game.

Comparing Profiles: Ventus Black Velo + vs. TR Black Velo +
When choosing between these two high performance options, the difference comes down to how much “load” you put on the club.
I Ventus Black VeloCore+ it remains a slow-launched, low-spin powerhouse with a very solid tip section. It offers a smooth, precise feel, and a “solid” feel that appeals to fast, aggressive players.
I Ventus TR Black VeloCore+by comparison, it pushes the startup and enters the “very low” phase. By reinforcing the handle section with Spread Tow material, it feels more “locked in” and more stable than the original. This is specifically designed for extreme speed and high swing load golfers who need the strongest grip profile Fujikura has ever produced.
Synopsis of Ventus Black: Regardless of the underlying model, the Black profile is designed Stability. It is the smallest and most popular member of the Ventus family. Using the strongest tip section to prevent the face from twisting, it has become the ultimate “anti-lefty” weapon for the world’s top speed players.
This is where it gets really interesting and where the video shows what human shafts look like. YES, on paper, the Ventus Black in any form is a slow-launched, low-spin unit. However, for me, it’s the shaft that not only puts me in the best position from a strike quality and confidence standpoint, but it’s the shaft that keeps me in the perfect launch and spin window. It’s not because I’m fast and strong, it’s because based on my delivery and everything else going on, Ventus Black gives me the best chance to HIT IN THE FACE.
Really, folks, that’s all that matters.

In all honesty, the way I choose to set up my bag to hit draw draws is more for survival than anything else. With summer coming up and a ton of golf to play, I needed to find a swing and some clubs to go with it so I could go through the summer, maintain a loft, and make solid golf accessible. Do I think I’ll be a Ventus Black guy forever? No. But the cool thing is, Fujikura has five other Ventus options to choose from, and I know, no matter where my action is turning, they have the hip to make it sing.
