The US and its partners have completed the removal of all enriched uranium from a legacy research facility in Venezuela, the Department of National Nuclear Security announced on Friday.
“For decades, the RV-1 reactor supported physics and nuclear research. When that work ended in 1991, its uranium, enriched above the critical 20 percent limit, became an abundant asset,” the NNSA said.
A team from the NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN) and technical experts from the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research “safely removed 13.5 kilograms (about 30 kilograms) of uranium from the RV-1 reactor,” the administration said. “We are working closely with the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] throughout, the team safely packed the uranium into a spent fuel barrel.”

The materials are then transported to the US, where they will be processed and reused, the NNSA said.
“The group then transported the cargo 100 kilometers away to a port in Venezuela. There, it transferred the cargo to a special cargo carrier provided by Nuclear Transport Solutions of the UK,” the announcement said. “The ship transported the cargo to the United States until it reached US shores in early May. Upon arrival, US teams took the containers to the Savannah River Site (SRS) for processing and recycling.”
SRS is located in the state of South Carolina, near Augusta, Ga.

“DOE’s Office of Environmental Management took the material from SRS. There, experts will process the material at the H-Canyon chemical separation facility to obtain highly enriched uranium for re-examination of America’s nuclear renaissance,” the NNSA said.
The move comes months after President Donald Trump ordered the US military to arrest Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in early January.

“The safe removal of all enriched uranium from Venezuela sends another signal to the world of a restored and revitalized Venezuela,” NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams said in a statement. “Thanks to President Trump’s strong leadership, the teams that volunteered on the ground completed in months what could have taken years.”
