‘Stand By Me’ actor Jerry O’Connell reveals his surprising real birth name

Jerry O’Connell revealed that Jerry is not his real name, but that in his mind he “was always Jerry.”

During a recent appearance on “Live with Kelly and Mark,” the 52-year-old actress and her mother, Linda, shared the actor’s real name, and why she decided to go with Jerry.

“His real name is Michael Jeremiah Witkowski O’Connell,” his mother explained. “His grandfather is Jeremiah, and our beloved cousin is Jerry DeScipio.”

Although his birth name is Michael, the actor shared that he was “always Jerry” and would often “look at myself, and I’d say, ‘Yeah, I’m Jerry. I don’t look like Michael, actually.’

The actor recently ruffled feathers when he shared on Bill Maher’s podcast in March that his wife and daughters got pregnant after the 2024 presidential election, when he suggested that “there was no planning” and that “there had to be a foundation.”

“They didn’t,” she said on an episode of Jamie Kennedy’s “Hate to Break It to You” podcast in April, responding to allegations that she allowed her family to beat her. “I take that back. I totally take that back. I was just kidding.”

He then found himself in hot water again when he made comments about his daughters partying and vaping during the same podcast appearance.

O’Connell shared that her daughters, who are 16, are “starting to go out, start having fun,” adding that since they’re “kids in Los Angeles. They’re going to party.” When Kennedy suggested that she keep her daughters out of the water, O’Connell explained that it was easier said than done.

“It’s addictive,” he said. “Like, so doesn’t another vape change? Shouldn’t I be dealing with, like, talking to them, like, the addict and how this is going to lead to a lifetime of addiction as opposed to like, ‘It’s not the vape’s fault.’

Many listeners took issue with the actor’s statements, with one writing, “Ditch the vape. Listen to your friend. And…protect your daughters.”

“Poor Jerry. Good guy. He wants the easy life. He’s too afraid of confrontation and backlash from critics, the public and those at home,” wrote one user.

The “Stand By Me” actress has been honest about her struggle with smoking addiction, previously telling Sophia Bush about her “Work in progress“The podcast he left after receiving the finale from his wife, actress Rebecca Romijn.

“I was fighting nicotine for decades, fighting it. I had to be put to sleep. I haven’t had a cigarette in 14 years,” he said. “My wife said she wouldn’t touch me if I smoked. And that went on for about two months. And then, no contact. My wife said, ‘I’m not touching you until you stop smoking.’ I thought it was a joke, and after two weeks, there was no physical contact.”
