Caitlin Clark receives a technical foul after a heated interaction with the referee in the Fever’s win over Sparks

Caitlin Clark was assessed her first foul of the season on Wednesday night after a verbal altercation with the referee.

During the Indiana Fever’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks, with 20 seconds left in the first half, Clark was called for a foul, giving Los Angeles a possession.

Clark later approached referee Jason Alabanza and appeared to have a verbal altercation.

Alabanza gave Clark a technical before Indiana headed to the visiting locker room for half an hour.

Nevertheless, the Fever went on to win 87-78.

Clark now has nine assists in her WNBA career, six in her rookie season and two in the injury-plagued 2025 season.

Clark seems to have had a passion for fighting referees since the beginning of his professional career. In the Fever’s season-opening loss to the Dallas Wings, Clark appeared to suggest some fouls weren’t called on him throughout the game.

“I think especially if they’re going to call it the way they’re going to call it this year, I think honestly I could get a few more calls from a few of them, but that’s OK,” Clark told reporters after the game when asked about the plays while driving to the basket on Saturday.

Whether the officials made enough mistakes against Clark has been a point of contention since he entered the league in 2024. Many fans complained that Clark was often targeted by opposing players and the referees did not do enough to protect him.

Meanwhile, Clark came up with another scandal of receiving a one-game suspension during his rookie year.

Clark also made comments that appeared to be directed at referees in the WNBA. During the WNBA postseason in September, when Clark was injured, she said she was fined $200 for tweeting “Refs couldn’t stop us” after Indiana’s Game 2 win over Atlanta in the first round.

“Fined $200 for this lol,” he wrote on X, adding a series of laughing emojis. “BENCH MOB WILL BE VERY ROWDY TOMORROW LETS GOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Previously, Clark was seen getting into a disagreement with the referee when they played against the Connecticut Sun last July.

“Are you playing with me?” Clark was seen saying as Fever assistant Briann January dragged him to the bench.

As officials continued to review the replay, ESPN’s broadcast showed Clark yelling at the officials again: “That’s just ridiculous. Grow up. Come here, come here. It’s unbelievable.”
