How Trump Survived Mistakes Through Repetition and Message Discipline

Donald Trump is a master of revisionist history.
He would argue that TikTok is a national security threat and that it is more important to society.
He reminds me of when he famously said that I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose support and I thought maybe he was right – now, at least, among MAGA diehards.
And you do it by just using the power of repetition.

How many times have you heard that the January 6th rioters, who called for the Capitol, are bigoted fanatics? Despite the fact that they attacked and injured the police, attacked members’ offices and demanded the hanging of Mike Pence?
When that happens, even many Republicans think Trump is finished. Big-name members of the GOP, as well as Democrats, criticized him in harsh terms.

But Trump has given the same answer over and over again. Reversing his usual law and order stance, he argued that it wasn’t really a riot. It wasn’t that big of a deal. After hearing him say it many times, some people think that there must be something to it. He wouldn’t just do that. For all his unscripted deviations, Trump has an uncanny ability to stay on message.
He’s like the loud guy in the Home Depot parking lot, using a megaphone to yell at anyone within earshot.
But hey, this guy still contested the 2016 election – which he won. Trump still claims the 2020 election was stolen from him – although that has never been proven in court, and he was the one making the calls to try to swing votes.
The latest uproar is about Trump settling his IRS lawsuit by creating a $1.7 billion fund to help the Jan. 6, even those convicted of serious crimes.

During his years outside of office, Trump fought criminal investigations four times, which everyone now admits actually helped him look like a political prosecution. And that apparently satisfied his never-ending desire for revenge.
During the first impeachment, the president, according to the document, asked Volodymyr Zelenskyy to announce the investigation of Joe Biden and his son Hunter. This was after Trump personally ordered the suspension of nearly $400 million in congressionally authorized aid to Ukraine.
“I heard that you had a very good prosecutor and he got shut down and that’s really wrong,” Trump said. “A lot of people are talking about that, the way they shut down your good prosecutor and you have very bad people involved…
“There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped prosecutions and a lot of people want to know about that, so anything you can do with the attorney general would be good. Biden went around bragging that he stopped prosecutions, so if you look at it… It sounds bad to me.”
TRUMP WARNS ‘THE CLOCK IS TICKING’: GO ‘FAST’ OR ‘THERE WILL BE NOTHING LEFT’
The problem? Nah. The president kept calling it “the perfect call.” Did you get that?
The Senate did not convict them of abuse of the House.
Which brings us to the war in Iran.
The president has rolled his eyes at his words many times, it is confusing. Trump said “the whole civilization is going to die tonight.” He then continued to extend the deadline. He said Tehran’s response was “rubbish” and did not bother to read it.
A bombing campaign was planned for yesterday – but Trump agreed to put it on hold at the urging of three Middle Eastern heads of state.

In terms of message discipline, Trump has said probably hundreds of times that the war is over, that he can pull out at any time, that our military has breached Iran’s defenses, destroyed its navy and air force, and that’s true.
Bursting with sarcasm, the president said on Truth Social that “all the soldiers came out of Tehran, weapons down and hands up, each one shouting ‘I surrender, I surrender’ while waving the wounded White flag, and if all the remaining leadership shows all the necessary ‘Documents of Surrender,’ and admit their defeat to that great power of Iran they will still write the great power of the United States. ‘Masterful and Glorious Victory.’
I have no doubt that some of the negative comments are driven by anti-Trump hostility in the media, but I have to defend the press to some degree here. No journalist or commentator can dispute the scope of America’s military victories, even though it is often stated. But with the double blockade and the Strait of Hormuz still unopened, that’s the story right now. There is no way to avoid focusing on that, as the ceasefire hangs in the balance, with no visible progress in getting the mullahs to stop developing nuclear weapons.
Trump was so intent on hitting that home that he got into this exchange before going to China.
The reporter asked if the president was motivated to make a deal with Iran because of “the financial situation of the American people.”
“At least,” Trump said – and it happened.

“The only thing that matters when I talk about Iran – they can’t have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about the financial situation of the American people. I don’t think about the person. I think about one thing – we can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.”
That was a rare blunder by Trump — repeating an offensive soundbite instead of framing the question in positive terms, as he often does.
Democrats, the media and other critics condemned the comments, with television and Internet sites repeating his words over and over again.
“That’s a perfect statement. I’ll make it again,” Trump told Fox’s Bret Baier.

It’s complete. There is that word again. None of this “I’m sorry my words were misinterpreted” or any such talk. It was just perfection.
Despite his involvement in two foreign wars and sinking polls at home, Trump is not letting go of past resentments.

As the New York Times reports, Trump aides have been holding secret talks with Greenland and are calling for a much bigger US role on the island. Greenland’s leaders are worried about these tactics.
Greenland again? Really?
