Mercedes-AMG’s 1,153 Hp Electric GT 4-Door Takes On Porsche’s Taycan

Mercedes-AMG is known for its sedans such as the GT63 SE Performance that comes with a complex 4.0-liter V8 biturbo hybrid powertrain. Now, the company has come up with its most powerful car ever, but it took a completely different route to get there. The new GT 4-Door Coupé is a 1,153 hp, electric-only beast with a new slimmer and lighter powertrain.

To build a car that can take on Porsche’s electric Taycan, Mercedes-AMG has come up with an 800-volt AMG.EA platform. It uses three new “axial-flux” engines that marry high power with reduced weight and size. The front engine is just 3.5 inches in diameter but is red above 15,000 rpm and only kicks in for extra performance or regenerative braking. The two rear motors (each about 3.2 inches high) are mated to a single-speed transmission and can hit just over 13,000 rpm. The entire powertrain weighs only 309 pounds.

Those little motors, combined with a 106kWh battery, can pump out some serious power. The GT55 variant outputs 805 hp and 1,328 lb-ft of torque, while the GT63 version produces 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft of torque. That will power the GT63 from 0 to 60 mph in 2.0 seconds, beating Porsche’s 940 hp Taycan Turbo S by 0.3 seconds. If you pine for the throaty ICE engine sound, GT models can automatically mimic the AMG V8, including the gearshift.

The GT 4-Door users a new type of battery, developed in collaboration with the company’s Formula 1 program. It uses very tall cylindrical cells (four inches+) that allow a high energy density of 298Wh/kg, as well as long life and fast charging functionality Mercedes-AMG says. It also has a non-conductive oil cooling system designed to keep the cells at the same temperature.

Using 800 volts up to 800 amps, the GT 4-Door can charge over 600 kW, which can take it from 10 to 80% full in 11 minutes. Mercedes-AMG says the GT55 and GT63 models (both using the same capacity battery) are rated at 370 to 470 kilometers on the European WLTP cycle, equivalent to more than 300 miles of EPA range.

To handle all that horsepower, the GT 4-Door has multilink suspension front and rear, with standard air suspension that’s bolstered by electronic dampers and AMG’s Active Ride Control. In everyday driving, the car will be limited mainly by regenerative braking, but during more sporty driving, the 5,400-kilogram car can be pulled to a stop by carbon-ceramic disc brakes at the front and steel rotor discs at the rear.

On the outside, the GT 4-Door has a sleek aerodynamic design with a drag coefficient of 0.22, featuring bulgy fenders, a panoramic glass roof and elegant strakes along the hood and side. It also looks quite tall, five inches longer than the Taycan. At the front there are lights like the three-point Mercedes star, and a large grille that tends to discriminate but allows air to enter below, controlled by a louver, to cool the battery. The taillights (six in all) also show the Mercedes logo, in case the onlookers weren’t there. indeed sure about the product.

The sporty interior has firm seats and a large central screen, as well as a dedicated front passenger display. The battery configuration, as well as the length, allows for more passenger space. The driver can choose between no less than seven driving modes, nine traction control settings and a warming feature that alerts the driver when the tires and engine are at the right temperature. There’s even a panel that delivers statistics on your race performance.

The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT55 4-Door Coupe will arrive later this year, while the high-performance GT63 version will go on sale in 2027. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S could fetch more than $200,000. Since the GT63 is likely to be more efficient than that, you can guess that it will be priced in that area as well.
