Sen. Cory Booker, DN.J., delivered a powerful, revival-style sermon at the Michigan Democratic Convention, shouting and waving signs as he urged Democrats to be “democracy’s foot soldiers” and warned that “darkness and wind” were sweeping the nation.

Booker was one of several out-of-state leaders, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, to participate in the Michigan Democratic Convention. All three have been included in the list of candidates for the 2028 presidential election.

Booker spoke for about 25 minutes and at several points shouted at the crowd, using poetic diction and word choice.

“Brothers, there is a storm in our nation” exclaimed Booker at the end of his speech. “There is darkness and air. People are getting hurt. What we need does not come from above. We need foot soldiers of our democracy who, in times of trial, are willing to stand up.”

Booker then declared that it was time for Democrats to “save the American dream.”

“Will you stand up for our democracy? Will you stand up for voting? Will you stand up for our children? Will you stand up for our elders?” Booker said. “And you will stand together, be united, be strong – be the hope the people need. We are Democrats. It’s time for a new deal. It’s time to save the American dream.”

Booker, who failed to run for president in 2020, used the speech as an opportunity to introduce himself to Michigan voters, sharing his career in politics and his family’s ties to the Great Lakes State.

At one point, he expressed his dismay at voters who opted out of voting for presidential candidates Hillary Clinton or Vice President Kamala Harris because they disagreed with “ten percent of his views.”

“Well, you might not agree with him on 10% of his ideas, but he’s letting someone into office that you don’t agree with on everything,” Booker said. “You allow someone to enter a position that imprisons our children. You let someone into a position that deprives us of health care. You let someone who took away the rights of workers. You let someone who fired the Department of Education.”

He then suggested that Democratic voters in Michigan change the Michigan hand — a reference to the state’s status — to a “Michigan fist.”

“I don’t want a Michigan hand after your August grade, I want a Michigan fist,” Booker yelled. “I want you all to unite. I want you to punch a hole in the wall of resistance. I want you to grab a hammer and knock things down. I want you to grab someone and get them off the couch and into the arena. We have points to put on the board. I want that Michigan boxing. I want unity.”

However, former MSNBC commentator Medhi Hasan disputed Booker’s assertion about Democratic voters not voting for Harris in 2024. Hasan said Booker’s interpretation places the blame on voters for the Democratic Alliance’s loss rather than the party’s platform.

“I tried to tell the people who didn’t vote Dem in 2024 to ‘teach the Democrats a lesson’ that unfortunately the Democrats won’t learn that lesson,” Hasan told X, sharing a video of Booker speaking. “Here’s Booker attacking and mocking people who didn’t come to vote for a Dem. It’s always the fault of the voters, not the Dems or their votes.”

Some critics scoffed at Booker’s acquittal.

“Calm down, Spartacus,” wrote America First Works, the nonprofit group and advocacy arm of the America First Policy Institute.
