Government Order Bans Myth 5 Despite Anthropic Opinions

The United States government issued a national security law order to Anthropic to stop access to their new Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models. This order forces Anthropic to cut off everyone’s access as it would be impossible to assess the state of the outside world.
Send Directional Control
The United States government issued the Export Control Directive, which is a legal order that restricts or stops the transfer of certain products, data, or technology to foreign countries or citizens of another country.
Anthropic announced:
“The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control order to stop all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign person, whether inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic’s foreign employees. The main effect of this order is that we must suddenly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance with all other models in Anthropic.
Order received at 5:21 PM EST. Anthropic’s explanation of the order cites that the United States government “believes that: there is a way to bypass the safety limits in myth 5. Anthropic considers the examples they reviewed to be of low risk.
Anthropic Counters Government Cybersecurity Concerns
Anthropic’s response is that they already have strong defenses in place that make it impossible for a human to misuse their Fable 5 AI Model. Their position seems to reverse the government’s statement that there is a security risk.
They explain:
“We’ve implemented strong protections that greatly reduce the likelihood of Fable being misused for cybersecurity-related activities (among other things). In fact, our protections are so strong that many users have complained that they’re overly broad.”
…Because complete resistance to jailbreak seems impossible today, Anthropic adopts a deep security strategy with Fable 5. We aimed to make jailbreaks smaller (in the case of non-universal jailbreaks) or more expensive to produce (in the case of universal jailbreaks), and to combine this with complete monitoring to quickly detect and block any successful attack.
We are on this defensive strategy in depth. It minimizes the risk that Fable brings, making it comparable to the risks of existing models that are already used throughout the industry.
We haven’t even gotten the revelation of a possible prison explosion leading to a fatal outcome. The cracks in the prison that may be revealed to us are negative responses or small results that do not provide a direct elevation of the Mythos.”
The United States Government’s Conflict with Anthropic
The United States government has had an ongoing dispute with Anthropic that stemmed from Anthropic’s refusal to allow their products to be used for mass surveillance at home and for autonomous weapons systems, which are weapons that can independently select their targets and engage without additional human involvement.
