Luka Doncic Explains What Kind of Players the Lakers Need Next Season

The Lakers need to make some changes in the 2026-27 season and Luka Doncic has pointed out where this should happen.

Doncic will be at the forefront of the roster building process, given that he is their star player and their future.

He recently talked about the type of players he would like to be surrounded by the Lakers during his European Jordan Brand tour.

“I think it’s mainly the shooters and a big man who can run the pick-and-roll and jump to pass to him. If I have shooters, they’re not going to double me and that helps,” he said, via Drafteados.

Luke has had great success with this type of player in the past. Big man who can protect the rim, rebound and be a lob threat in pick and roll situations.

For example, Derek Lively II and Daniel Gafford in Dallas were killing Luke.

Jaxson Hayes has also been a dangerous combo with the Lakers star.

Deandre Ayton not so much…

Former Lakers player Danny Green seems to agree with Luke.

He spoke on the radio about the level of players that the purple and gold should look out for this season.

“Defensive guys, right? Defense and shooters,” Green said on ESPN LA radio. “That’s not a real secret or science to it. If you want to have a good winning team, you need some stars and you need a good quality big man who can rebound and 3 and D guys around him. If you can get that at a good price, you have a good chance to be successful and win some championships.”

Two players already on the roster are free agents and are believed to be the Lakers’ top priority to re-sign this offseason, said The Athletic’s Dan Woike.

“The belief is that Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes are the players that the Lakers will prioritize back as they try to fit the roster around Dončić,” he said. “And every piece of the puzzle the Lakers feel they need to add to their cap space takes a piece that can go to James.”
