Cohere, a Toronto-based startup led by Aidan Gomez, has established itself as Canada’s AI darling. Now, with the acquisition of Germany’s Aleph Alpha, the company is heading to Europe, combining talent, computing and the national ecosystem to create a new transatlantic alliance. In an AI race increasingly dominated by giants in the US and China, the deal is compelling industry push to make room for other options.

“Combining the strengths of Cohere and Aleph Alpha accelerates our global expansion and furthers our mission to bring AI to the nations around the world,” Gomez said in a statement. “Built on a foundation of shared values in Canada and Germany—where privacy, security, and responsible innovation are paramount—we are uniquely positioned to be the world’s trusted AI partner.”

Financial terms were not disclosed. Cohere is expected to be valued at about $20 billion once the deal closes and its ongoing Series E round, according to Axios. The company was last valued at $7 billion following a $100 million raise last year. It counts McKinsey, Fujitsu and Royal Bank of Canada among its clients, as well as government agencies.

Despite being only 28 years old, Gomez has contributed to many important AI concepts. He studied under Geoffrey Hinton and co-wrote a landmark 2017 paper, “Attention Is All You Need,” introducing transformer models. In 2019, he founded Cohere with fellow former Google researchers Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang, building the company around secure AI tools, focused on business rather than consumer applications.

As part of the Aleph Alpha deal, Cohere will also receive approximately $600 million from Germany’s Schwarz Group during its financing round. Backed by supermarket billionaire Dieter Schwarz, the Schwarz Group is also a backer of Aleph Alpha, participating in its $500 million Series B round in 2023. The Heidelberg-based company develops large independent language brands for industrial and government clients across Europe.

Aleph Alpha was founded in 2019 by Jonas Andrulis and Samuel Weinbach. Andrulis stepped down as CEO of the company in October 2025 after six years at the helm. The startup is now led by CEOs Reto Spörri and Ilhan Scheer.

Germany has emerged as an important AI hub in recent years, producing companies such as Black Forest Labs, an image generation startup valued at $3.25 billion last year; Parloa, an agent platform valued at $3 billion in January; and Helsing, a defense technology company valued at nearly $14 billion last summer. Alongside France and the UK, Germany remains the leading destination for investment, and AI accounts for a growing share of that work. About one in four VC-backed European startups are now AI-related, according to Pitchbook.

The combined Cohere–Aleph Alpha organization will focus on secure, customized AI in highly regulated sectors, including government, finance, defense, energy, manufacturing, telecommunications and healthcare. “We are creating a real counterweight for organizations that refuse to control their AI to a single provider or location,” said Aleph Alpha co-CEO Scheer.

Cohere is not alone in addressing this need. France’s Mistral AI has also positioned itself as a champion of independent AI, and earlier this year committed nearly $1.4 billion to build data centers in Sweden, marking its biggest infrastructure push outside of France.

The demand for autonomous AI is expected to accelerate. McKinsey estimates that the broader AI market could surpass $1 trillion by 2030, with autonomous AI accounting for $500 billion and $600 billion of that amount.

For Cohere, this initiative also has national significance. The purchase of Aleph Alpha is “a big moment for Canadian AI,” said Evan Solomon, Canada’s minister of AI and digitalization, in a statement. “This partnership strengthens Canada’s position in the global AI economy and shows how trusted partners can work together to build an independent AI force.”
