The trailer for season 3 of House of the Dragon is here, and it’s every bit as brutal as we hoped

Season 2 of The House of the Beast it was a slow disaster. Seasons 1 and 2 were filled with misunderstandings, power plays, and a civil war that kept threatening to explode but never did.

Eight episodes of carefully arranged chess pieces, and when the finale came, the most amazing thing that happened was Alicent sneaking off to Dragonstone to make a secret deal with Rhaenyra to end the Targaryen civil war.

It was a great scene, but it also meant that the real battle everyone was watching was still waiting in the wings. The season ended with the troops on the march with no way to avoid what would follow.

What does the House of the Dragon season 3 trailer reveal?

The trailer opens with Daemon telling Rhaenyra, “Now you have a power that no one has ever used. He will have an undisputed kingdom, and our children will rule it forever and ever.” It strikes in a different way, especially coming from a man who wanted that power for himself.

Meanwhile, Aegon II, heavily scarred after his dragon’s collision at Rook’s Rest, fled to the Red Keep for Braavos with Larys Strong. But don’t confuse that with devotion. He makes his intentions clear in the trailer: “I will kill my brother,” he says of Aemond, “or die in the attempt.”

That leaves Aemond driving the show in King’s Landing, sitting on the Iron Throne like someone who’s been waiting his whole life for this moment. Alicent, on the other hand, is still trying to pull things together, warning whoever sits on the throne that ruling will require him to do things that his heart would never have backed away from.

Daemon, who spent most of season 2 alone in Harrenhal, haunted by unsatisfying ideas, seems to be back in the thick of things. In true Daemon fashion, he is covered in blood and standing in the middle of the battle. Rhaenyra gets the last word, saying, “There can be no doubt which gods have chosen to rule.”

Will the Battle of the Gullet be everything fans have been waiting for?

That’s a big question, and the trailer makes a convincing case for yes. The Battle of the Gullet was supposed to take place in season 2, but was interrupted when the number of episodes was reduced from ten to eight, a decision that did not go down well with fans. Ryan Condal admitted the frustration directly and promised that the wait will be worth it.

He called Gullet the second most anticipated event in all of Fire and Blood, and said it deserves the right time and place to be done properly. Season 3 is already being billed as their biggest yet by any margin, and the trailer seems to back that up.

We see glimpses of a naval battle, Daemon in the midst of battle, and Rhaenyra on the brink of what looks like victory. Although, as anyone following this story knows, nothing in Westeros comes easy. Season 3 is the first chapter in a planned four-season run, so the stakes have never been higher.

When is House of the Dragon season 3 coming out?

Season 3 premieres June 21, 2026, on HBO and Max. New episodes will air weekly at 9 pm ET/PT, running for eight episodes until the season finale on August 9, 2026. We pick up directly after the end of season 2 and continue the Dance of the Dragons civil war.
