Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 can finally fix the big problem with folders

Samsung’s foldables have consistently led the market in terms of polish and software, but one complaint has followed the Galaxy Z Fold series for years: battery life. Now, a new leak suggests that Samsung may finally address that issue with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, along with improved camera and slim design.
According to a report from Greek publication TechManiacs, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could pack a larger 5,000mAh battery – a significant jump from the 4,400mAh cell used in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. If accurate, this would mark the most significant hardware upgrade to Samsung’s foldable book-style system in years.
It’s possible that Samsung will finally catch on to foldable hardware
Battery capacity is increasingly becoming a weak point in Samsung’s portfolio, especially as Chinese rivals such as OnePlus, Honor, Vivo, and Xiaomi continue to push larger batteries into smaller foldable designs. While Samsung has traditionally prioritized weight, software optimization, and durability, the company has also been criticized for relying on smaller batteries compared to competitors.
A new report suggests that Samsung is now trying to balance the two. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is tipped to feature a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset while being slightly thinner and lighter at 4.1mm wide and around 210 grams. That would make it 5 grams lighter than its predecessor despite the larger battery.
Camera upgrades are reportedly on the way. Samsung is expected to keep the original 200MP sensor and 10MP selfie camera while upgrading the ultra-wide camera to 50MP. There is currently no information about the telephoto sensor, although the Fold 7 uses a 10MP setup.
A new “wider” fold may also be coming
The report also refers to another foldable device currently being called the “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.” Samsung hasn’t officially accepted such a product yet, but leaks suggest it could show a different approach to foldable design.
According to the report, the device may use a 4:3 internal display accompanied by two 50MP rear cameras and a 4,800mAh battery. It is also said to weigh 200 grams.
If Samsung were to introduce a wider foldable, it would indicate the company is experimenting with different form factors as competition in the foldable space heats up.
Why is this important?
Samsung remains one of the most important players in the foldable market, but the company has recently faced pressure from companies offering smaller designs, larger batteries, and faster charging.
The move to a 5,000mAh battery may sound basic compared to conventional phones, but for Samsung’s foldables, it could represent a long overdue upgrade. Combined with new silicon-carbon battery technology becoming more common across the industry, users are increasingly expecting foldables to stop compromising endurance.

At the same time, Samsung still holds a significant advantage in software support, ecosystem integration, and global availability – areas where many competitors continue to lag behind.
What happens next
As with earlier leaks, this information should still be treated with care. TechManiacs has leaked some Samsung hardware details in the past, but also missed out on some specifications, including the thickness of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 later this year and the next Galaxy Z Flip edition. If this leak proves to be accurate, the Fold 8 may end up being less about a radical redesign and more about finally fixing the functional compromises that users have been complaining about for years.
