Isaiah Thomas Returns to Celtics in Front Office Role

Boston Celtics fan favorite Isaiah Thomas is reportedly returning to Boston, but this time he will be working off the court.

Thomas has rejoined the Celtics organization as a professional and college scout, marking a new chapter for the former All-Star after years of trying to make an NBA comeback, according to Boston Globe reporter Adam Himmelsbach.

Thomas is already working out with Boston executives this week at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.

The Celtics currently own the No. 27 pick in next month’s draft, and the organization appears to be giving Thomas an early introduction to front office life.

The move also returns Thomas to a franchise where he played the best basketball of his career.

After arriving in Boston in the 2014-15 season, he quickly became one of the most electric scorers and helped turn the Celtics into a contender in the Eastern Conference.

He earned back-to-back All-Star selections in 2016 and 2017 while becoming one of the most popular players in franchise history.

That stretch came to an abrupt end during the 2017 playoffs when Thomas suffered a hip injury that ultimately changed the course of his career.

Before the following season, Boston traded Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a blockbuster deal that brought Kyrie Irving to the Celtics. Injuries continued to plague Thomas after that, leading him to play with multiple franchises throughout the NBA over the next few years.

Even after jumping the league, he didn’t stop playing completely. He recently committed to the Salt Lake City Stars, the G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, in January 2025 after signing in an attempt to restart his career.

Before that, he signed a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns in March 2024, although he never appeared in a game.

Now, instead of chasing another roster spot, Thomas looks set to begin building a future in talent scouting and player development with a franchise where he becomes a star.
