James Harden’s Game 7 legacy is on the line as the Cavaliers face the Pistons

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

The NBA takes a lot of pride in having meaningless games, and I can really understand, watching it on a random Wednesday in January. However, the playoffs were repeatedly brought to the audience and rewarded for putting up with garbage regular season games.

This will be the fourth play off game. Three series were sweeps, and the other three were six games. That shows competitive hoops. Now, how do we bet this game 7 in the Eastern Conference?

The Cleveland Cavaliers blew it. After going winless in the entire postseason road game, they took Game 5 in surprising fashion. It looked like they would win in six games. After all, they could lose a game at home in the postseason.

Instead, Detroit came out and beat the Cavs, giving them no chance to find their footing. They lost badly and now they have to find a way to win a game on the road.

It’s not just the Cavs’ fate that is at stake in this game. It’s also the legacy of James Harden and, to a lesser extent, Donovan Mitchell.

We know Mitchell is a great player, but he is not considered one of the best. Harden i. Unfortunately, Harden has struggled in Game 7s. He averaged 19.1 points, 7.3 assists and 5.8 rebounds. That’s not bad, but if you look at his shooting percentages, he’s 35.3% and 22.2% in those games. He’s actually 4-4 in games, but in his last three games, he’s scored a combined 34 points in 113 minutes.

The Detroit Pistons seem to like playing with their backs against the wall. They are a strong team, so I think it makes sense.

Cade Cunningham continues to deliver for the team, and finally got help in Game 6 from Jalen Duren. This wasn’t going to be an easy series for Duren, but it feels like he’s taking more time to mature than others. He’s definitely improved this year, but the consistency they need from him hasn’t come yet.

Now that the team is going home they will need Duren to be a glass monster. If he can keep the Pistons in the back-to-back battle, he should win this game easily. They won Game 6 by just three rebounds, but that takes away much of what Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley did for the Cavs. It’s not everything, though, as the Pistons won a rebounding battle in every loss in Cleveland.

I don’t see this as an escape game for the Pistons. Mitchell and Cunningham may cancel each other out in scoring. Harden needs to prove himself as the third player on the floor. I haven’t seen him do that in the postseason, yet.

This is the second play-off for both clubs, so it’s not like they’ll be caught unawares about what this entails.

When I look at it objectively, I think the Cavs have the better players. However, the Pistons have looked much better this season, and definitely in the playoffs overall. Both are prone to problems and slippery. The Cavs shouldn’t be as they are an old team.

This game must be won by Cleveland, however. There is too much riding on the franchise and the guys’ legacy for them not to prepare properly. Maybe that’s a weak analysis, but I’m taking the Cavs by points and I think they win outright. I expect a monster game from Mitchell, and Harden should get 10+ assists.

Either way, whoever wins will lose to the New York Knicks.
