Jeff Bezos made a proposal that ignited the debate over America’s income tax

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

Billionaire Jeff Bezos recently detonated a financial hand grenade amid the US tax debate.

The founder of Amazon recently suggested that the bottom half of American earners should pay federal income tax. Not lower taxes. It is not a temporary discount. Zero.

And whether you love billionaires or hate them, you have to admit there’s something wrong with Bezos’ proposal.

Many Americans hear that idea and think, “Really…why do I pay taxes?”

That’s because the middle class feels financially drained.

  • Housing costs exploded.
  • Insurance costs exploded.
  • College costs exploded.
  • The stores cost somewhat more than a car payment 20 years ago.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans feel like they’re running on a treadmill set to 11 while Washington keeps telling them to run faster.

THAT’S WHY YOU MAKE SIX FIGURES AND STILL LIVE TO PAY PAY

Bezos pointed out that the lowest-income earners contribute only a smaller portion of total federal tax revenue than the highest earners. A few weeks ago, I told you that the bottom 50% of taxpayers in America pay only 3% of the federal income tax.

Here’s the part no one wants to say out loud. Many low-income Americans already pay little or no federal income tax after deductions and credits.

So, what Bezos is really proposing is not just a tax cut. America’s psychological reset.

DAVID MARCUS: TAX-FREE EXTENDED TIME COULD BE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GOP’S MAGIC

He says, “What if the job pays again?”

That is the fire of politics.

Many Americans hear that idea and think, “Really…why do I pay taxes?”

Imagine a nurse making $75,000 suddenly saving a few thousand dollars more every year:

TRUMP BEAT RETURN ON FAMILY TAXES IN 2025. HERE’S WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN NEXT

  • That’s kindergarten money.
  • Car repairs and gas money.
  • Emergency savings.

Real breathing room. And perhaps the answer instead is the future of universal basic income.

And frankly, in the richest country in the history of the world, is it fair to ask, “why are we oppressing people who are still ahead?”

But this is where the discussion gets dangerous. And my biggest concern is paying more than my fair share already.

Because someone still has to pay the government.

  • Social Security.
  • Medicare.
  • Self defense.
  • Interest on the national debt.
  • Infrastructure.
  • Veterans benefit.

Washington spends money like a stupid teenager on his parents’ credit card.

AMERICA’S $39 TRILLION DEBT BOOM MAY BE MORE PAINFUL BEYOND IMAGINE.

So, if a state stops paying federal income tax, one of three things happens:

The rich pay more. Check it out. The government is drastically reducing spending. It doesn’t happen. Or America borrows and prints more money. Check it out.

As Meat Loaf sang years ago, two out of three ain’t bad. Or is it?

DAVID MARCUS: WHY NO ONE WANTS TO PAY OFF THE NATIONAL DEBT EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE SAYS THEY SHOULD

This is the reality of our political world. Politicians hate spending cuts because spending buys votes.

So, historically, Washington chooses Option C. Debt. There is a lot.

A few weeks ago, I told you that the bottom 50% of taxpayers in America pay only 3% of the federal income tax.

America is already sitting on $39 trillion in national debt and will surpass $40 trillion before the end of the year, and interest payments alone are the third largest item in the federal budget.

THE NATIONAL DEBT IS ABOUT TO HIT AN AWFUL NUMBER NO MATTER WHAT WE DO.

They are not sustainable statistics. That’s Ozempic. It temporarily blocks the pain while the underlying problem gets worse. And this is where both political parties are being dishonest with the American people.

The left acts like only billionaires can fund the modern welfare state forever. They don’t know.

The righteous do as the tax cuts surprisingly pay for themselves. Usually they don’t.

The truth is worse. America is addicted to spending money and the tax code no one understands.

That’s why Bezos’ comments are so shocking.

Because deep down, millions of Americans feel that the system has stopped rewarding productive behavior. On our 250th anniversary, do we really want to stop rewarding hard work, productivity and capitalism?

‘ZOHRANOMICS’: THE FLOWERS OF NYC MAYOR ZOHRAN MAMDANI ARE MORE

People don’t mind paying taxes if they believe the system is fair. They rebel emotionally when they feel that the rules have been tightened. And that’s exactly where we are right now.

This argument also reveals something even greater. America may be gradually moving from an income tax society to a consumption tax society.

In other words: More tax consumption. Tax works slowly. What about marginal tax and VAT (value-added tax)?

JASON CHAFFETZ: THE 2028 ELECTION WILL BE A REFERENDUM ON OUR AI-RULED FUTURE

That’s why ideas like national sales taxes, VAT taxes, luxury taxes and “consumption-based” taxes are gaining traction in both political parties.

Because if AI, automation and globalization continue to reshape work, taxation may become difficult and politically difficult.

But before Americans start chanting “zero taxes,” they should ask one important question.

Are you looking for Scandinavian-style taxes with Scandinavian-style benefits? Or American-style taxes with American-style freedoms?

Because in the end, math always wins. Personally, I’m a capitalist and I’m not ready to give that up anytime soon.

Jeff Bezos may have started the conversation. But the real battle is not about billionaires versus workers.

It’s about whether America knows how to pay for the country we want to be in in the next 250 years.
