Sentry takes over as the new sponsor of the PGA Tour’s Torrey Pines event

Hello, Hawaii. The Sentry is moving to San Diego.

The PGA Tour announced Monday that Sentry Insurance will take over title sponsorship of the Tour’s longest-running event at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Starting next season, the tournament will be called Sentry.

If that name sounds familiar, that’s because it is.

The Sentry, sponsored by Sentry Insurance, had long been the Tour’s season-opening event held in Hawaii, although it was canceled this year as reports of its demise began to circulate. In April, the Tour confirmed reports that it would not return to Hawaii in 2027.

At the Players Championship in March, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said one of the tour’s six key themes in its future will be the start of the West Coast season — “we want to open a big marquee event in a big place,” he said — in late January. Pieces of the 2027 schedule have leaked out a bit over the past few months, though The Sentry won’t be the event to kick off the new season next year. Its dates are Jan. 27-30, 2027, including finishing on a Saturday so as not to interfere with the NFL Playoffs. American Express of La Quinta, Calif., has already confirmed on Jan. 21-24, 2027.

In that Rolapp press conference mentioned above, he said that significant changes will take place in 2028, including his two-track plan. It’s unclear where Sentry would fit in at that point, though it would be a logical place to start in future seasons.

The PGA Tour has played annually at Torrey Pines since 1968, using both the North Course and the South Course for its events. (The South Course has also hosted two US Opens.) The tournament has changed names several times over the years, though it was the Farmers Insurance Open from 2010 to 2026, with Justin Rose winning the most recent addition. Reports first surfaced in 2024 that Farmers Insurance would not renew its contract at Torrey Pines when it expires in 2026.

“It’s been 75 years since the PGA Tour has hosted an elite tournament in San Diego, including the last 60 at the prestigious Torrey Pines, and we’re proud to build on that legacy and the long-term impact of philanthropy with our partners at Sentry Insurance,” Rolapp said in a press release. “We are pleased to have the support of Sentry and the Century Club of San Diego to enhance what fans and players have long known as one of the most celebrated venues and events in our sport.”
