Texas orders Islamic university to be closed for illegal degree programs

Texas officials they ordered an Islamic university in the Dallas area to be closed after accusing the school of illegally offering degree programs without federal approval.

In a Letter of May 6 sent to the University of TexAM in Dallas, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board said the organization “must immediately stop advertising, offering, and enrolling students in degrees or programs of study until it has applied for and been granted a Certificate of Authority.”

The letter alleges that TexAM University in Dallas “uses the ‘university’ that it “provides[s] STEM degree programs’ both online and on the ‘Richardson campus.'”

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board wrote that, after a review, it found that TexAM is not in compliance with Texas laws and regulations.

“TexAM’s advertising and postings through its website indicate that your business holds itself out as offering State of Texas STEM degree programs, including master’s degrees in Artificial Intelligence and admission to bachelor’s degree programs in computer science, IT, cybersecurity, and health information,” the letter reads.

On Monday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton he announced that he was suing TexAM University in Dallas “for misrepresenting itself as a university, offering degrees it is not authorized to grant, and misleading prospective students about its legitimacy.”

In a press release, Paxton said TexAM University in Dallas is also “adopting marketing and a name that is ‘confusingly similar’ to Texas A&M University.”

“TexAM has repeatedly violated Texas law, misrepresented its authority to grant degrees, and risked misleading students about its legitimacy,” Paxton said. “My office will not allow illegal, unlicensed degree mills to operate in Texas.”

In their letter, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board said that on May 8, TexAM University in Dallas was required to sign an attached letter and return it to the institution confirming that the organization has stopped donating.

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, Shahid A. Bajwa, founder and chairman of the board of trustees at the Texas American Muslim Institute for Technology said, “We have just learned that the Attorney General’s office has filed a Complaint of non-compliance. And it has not even been officially mentioned. However, we are ready to discuss and resolve any differences.

Regarding the letter from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Bajwa said, “We have already complied with the instructions of the THECB Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and sent it by email as required on May 11. The deadline has been extended by THECB. We do not operate as a “University” and we do not use the word “University,” and we do not offer them Degree programs and charge them any tuition.

He also said that the organization has destroyed its websites and social media accounts.

Regarding the similarity of the business name with Texas A&M University, Bajwa said, “Texas A&M University has given us a deadline to comply and stop using our Brand Name “TexAM” as they suspect it is causing confusion, supposedly, due to some similarity. We are looking into it and will be able to communicate with them accordingly.”
