The Mandalorian and Grogu are a lazy attempt to bring TV to the Big Screen

The Mandalorian and the Grogu it was an afterthought, and it shows. It was put on hold after the 2023 Hollywood writer’s strike was delayed The Mandalorian’s season four, although director and writer Jon Favreau had already finished the scripts for that season. So Favreau had to go back to the drawing board to create a whole new adventure for his two characters, one that didn’t rely too much on the previous knowledge of the TV series, and that could tell a self-contained story in a few hours.

The result is a space adventure that feels incredibly low-key for a Star Wars movie. After the end of The Mandalorian’s season three, the armor-clad Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his little green ward are now working for the New Republic to find former Imperial bosses, and finally bring them to justice. In an almost video game-like setup, Djarin is tasked with hunting down a mysterious Imperial, but he does. again involves finding the kidnapped son of Boba Fett. It may also be a download request.

It’s a plot that works well when you’re trying to map out a few episodes of a regular TV show that one can throw on while folding laundry. But it’s very disappointing if you’re in an IMAX theater, expecting a high-end Star Wars re-creation. Indeed, there is a visceral thrill in seeing Dinn Djarin take down the Imperials again their AT-ATs with one hand. But, unfortunately, we have seen him do that on TV. The Mandalorian and the Grogu you simply offer nothing new.

Although Favreau and Dave Filoni (who is still the head of Lucasfilm and all things Star Wars) released this film as a stand-alone adventure, it is also not friendly to people who have never seen it. The Mandalorian. We don’t get an explanation of who Din Djarin really is, or why he feels compelled to hang around the green baby. We know they are partners, but Grogu’s importance is not affected. And there are characters who play major roles in the film, like Djarin’s pilot Zeb, who are not named until the end. (Anime fans take note: Zeb is voiced by iconic voice actor Steve Blum, so there’s a certain kick to hearing Spike Spiegel’s voice play another space bounty hunter.)

The film also anticipates that audiences are already enamored with Grogu, a Yoda-like superhuman creature that bawls like a baby and eats everything in sight. If you’re not down for his antics, sometimes bordering on the cartoonish, this movie might be a lot of fun. But if you like Grogu, there’s a big part of the movie that he’s left to do on his own, and it shows that he’s at least matured in the series.

However, to be clear, The Mandalorian and the Grogu it’s not a bad movie. It’s more fun Alonea movie that I think a lot of people have completely forgotten about, and it’s not nearly as disappointing Rise of Skywalker. It’s a fun space romp that’s entertaining enough to hold your attention during the hot summer months. But it doesn’t give anything away The Mandalorian which has already made it to the TV screens. I saw a Star Wars series with similar ambitions Andor and excellent-but-unpopular The Acolyte surviving the big screen movement without much effort, but The Mandalorian and the Grogu it still feels limited by its small-scale origins.
