After a disappointing ending, Vought Rising looks like it could be the Boys universe’s saving grace.

Boys wrapped its five-season run two days ago, and Prime Video is already keeping the hype train rolling. The first trailer for Vought Risinga prequel spinoff set in 1950s New York City, just arrived — and it looks promising.

The show follows a young, wide-eyed boy (Jensen Ackles) who is ready for the first time, who meets a new group of players who believe they are a gift from God. Spoiler: they are not!

What is Vought Rising all about? The Boys prequel trailer explained

The trailer wastes no time in establishing its world. Vought Rising is set in the creation of the first-ever superhero team, powered by V-One. It is the first version of Compound V, a drug that induces superpowers in humans.

You will see the Sage Grove Center from Boys Season 2where Vought performed brutal experiments on mentally ill patients. Here, it’s shown in its classic form, with an unnamed character played by Jorden Myrie injected with V-One and coming out of storage.

This detail has more weight when you consider Vought’s Nazi roots and realize who is being tested. Back when the V-One was first developed, Vought’s public-facing heroes were predominantly white, while his test subjects were Black men. It’s a dynamic similar to the Isaiah Bradley arc it’s from The Falcon and the Winter Soldierwhere the All-Black unit was used to try to replicate the serum behind Captain America’s powers.

The cast includes Mason Dye’s Bombsight, Will Hochman’s Torpedo, and Elizabeth Posey’s Private Angel. Aya Cash returns as Clara Vought, better known as Stormfront. He is a secret Nazi villain from season 2 who co-leads with Ackles.

Can Vought Rising bring back Bafana fans who were disappointed with the result?

Many fans felt burned out by season 5, which spent most of its runtime establishing Vought Rising rather than nailing its own. Soldier Boy dominated the screen time during the season until he was left on ice, with nothing really resolved about his character. It felt like a bait-and-switch.

The cancellation of Gen V, a college-set thriller spinoff that didn’t get its third season, deepened the frustration. The combination of letdowns makes sense to approach Vought Rising with caution. The trailer, however, is hard to pull off on its own merits.

The 1950s aesthetic is sharp, the production looks distinctly stylish, and there’s a sense of renewed ownership that this space badly needed. Vought Rising is also one of two planned spinoffs, the other being The Boys: Mexico, directed by Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, which is still in production.

Vought Rising comes to Prime Video sometime in 2027, and how the world could shape the future of this universe.
