BMW debuts color-changing iX3 Flow Edition with E Ink exterior at Beijing Auto Show 2026

At the Beijing Auto Show 2026, BMW unveiled the iX3 Flow Edition, which will be the first time Prism’s E Ink technology has been integrated into a series production car. The announcement marks a major leap from test vehicles to real-world automotive applications, bringing dynamic, color-changing environments to everyday travel.
From Concept to Production Reality
The iX3 Flow Edition represents the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between BMW and E Ink. Previous milestones include the iX Flow concept shown at CES 2022 and the i Vision Dee in 2023, both of which demonstrate the power of electrophoretic displays in automotive design. However, those remained experimental.
With the iX3 Flow Edition, iE Ink Prism is now embedded directly into the car’s bonnet structure and has passed automotive durability and safety tests. This transition from concept to production-ready technology highlights that the programmable exterior is no longer a futuristic gimmick but a practical feature in future vehicles.
Why This Highlight Matters
At its core, E Ink’s electrophoretic technology uses microcapsules filled with charged particles that move under electrical signals to change color. Unlike traditional displays, it only consumes power when it changes states, making it very economical – an important factor in electric vehicles.
This innovation opens up new design and operational opportunities. Besides aesthetics, a dynamic exterior can improve thermal efficiency by reflecting or absorbing heat, improving visibility, or communicating the vehicle’s status. It also pushes the boundaries of what materials and surfaces in vehicles can be achieved, especially for curved and complex geometries.
A New Level of Personal Expression
The iX3 Flow Edition introduces eight selectable animation styles, allowing drivers to customize the look of the car based on mood or context. This turns the car into a personal digital canvas, combining automotive engineering and interactive design.

For consumers, it signals a shift toward cars that are not just transportation tools but versatile, flexible tools. Like connecting customized smartphones, cars are now turning into platforms for personal ownership.
Next
The iX3 Flow Edition acts as a bridge to the wider adoption of ePaper surfaces in all future BMW models. While the initial launch may still feature premium features, scale production may eventually bring a revolutionary exterior to mainstream segments.
For E Ink, this milestone validates its vision to bring ePaper beyond screens and into everyday spaces. In the automotive industry, it sets the stage for a new era where automotive design becomes customizable, flexible, and deeply personal.
