California candidate Mai Vang will not say the Pledge of Allegiance

California’s 7th Congressional District candidate and Sacramento City Council member Mai Vang is receiving backlash after videos surfaced of her refusing to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, several clips showed Vang turning aside or remaining silent at city council meetings as members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. On a recent Wednesday, Van was seen looking down as he took the oath.

Wang, who has held his seat on the Sacramento City Council since 2020, previously spoke about his refusal to say the 2025 Facebook Pledge of Allegiance.

“[T]that’s why I choose not to say the Pledge of Allegiance at every council meeting,” Vang said. “As much as I love this country, I use that time to stand up for myself—to focus our communities and remind them of the injustice and harm that continues to affect so many, locally and around the world, under the influence of this nation.”

He continued, “We don’t have to listen—they want us to be numb to the realities we see on the news—it’s part of a strategy to keep us apathetic. But instead, we resist. We surround ourselves with those we love, take time to rest, stay awake, and stay focused on the fight for equality, justice and humanity. We got it. I love you all.”

Vang is one of the few seeking to challenge Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui, who has held the California seat for more than 20 years.

The Sacramento city council member is also the latest in a string of candidates seeking to challenge longtime Democratic incumbents. Vang has voiced support for far-left positions such as universal health care, increased taxes on billionaires and ending ICE.

Commenting in the New York Post, Sacramento Democratic political consultant Steve Maviglio called Vang’s actions “absolutely disrespectful.”

“It’s ‘Patriotism 101,’ you say the Pledge of Allegiance even if you don’t agree with everything,” Maviglio said. “You can’t say the Pledge of Allegiance—is that a trickster? Come on.”
