Dodgers select Wyatt Mills, Transfer Edwin Díaz to 60-day disabled list

The Dodgers plan to pick up the right-hander’s contract Wyatt Millsaccording to Sonja Chen of MLB.com. Paul Gervase is selected to free up space in the active list. Nearby Edwin Díaz is being placed on the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.
Mills has thrown a total of 42 innings in the majors, all since 2021-22 with the Mariners and Royals. He has a 6.21 ERA in that span, along with a 19.3% strikeout rate and a 10.4% walk rate. Those results are unwatchable and four years old right now. Mills missed 2023-24 due to July 2023 Tommy John surgery, eventually returning to the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate in 2025. In 52 innings in 32 appearances (seven starts), Mills had a solid 3.12 ERA but a less than encouraging 133% walk rate. He was better in 2026 for the Dodgers’ senior team, with a 3.26 ERA and 2.05 FIP in 19 1/3 innings.
Mills’ promotion gives the Dodgers a new arm in exchange for Gervase, who threw 50 pitches in three innings of relief yesterday against the Braves. Gervase, who was recalled on May 8, has played just one game in the Majors this year. Mill figures to fill the same role as a low-level, long-release option. He may only be selected for a short period of time, during which time he will be assigned to be assigned and assigned to other teams if he quits. Mills still has one year of option left if the Dodgers want to trade him without exposing him to waivers.
As for Díaz, his move to the 60-day disabled list is expected. The closer went on the 15-day injured list on April 20 with loose ligaments in his right elbow, and had surgery to remove them soon after. Díaz isn’t expected back until the second half of the season, so it’s no surprise to see him transferred to the 60-day IL now that the 40-man roster is needed. It is the second time Díaz has been on the IL for 60 days in his career, the first being in 2023 when he injured the patellar tendon in his right knee during that year’s World Baseball Classic.
