Marxist political commentator and Twitch host Hasan Piker criticized New Jersey Governor Mike Sherrill during a live broadcast on Sunday, accusing the Democratic governor of helping the Trump administration’s immigration agenda with his response to anti-ICE protests outside a detention center in Newark.
Piker’s criticism comes after Sherrill defended the deployment of state police to protests outside Delaney Hall, the ICE facility in Newark, saying he would not allow the riots to provide an excuse to expand immigration enforcement in New Jersey.
“I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I’m not going to give ICE an excuse,” Sherrill said in remarks that aired during Piker’s radio response.
Piker quickly scoffed at the governor’s explanation.

“Yeah, I’m not going to give ICE an excuse. So I’m going to make sure they don’t have to do anything because I’m going to do it myself,” Piker said. “That’s the meta here for this green state and its new blue ruler.”
The political commentator then extended his criticism beyond Sherrill’s handling of the protests.
“This is the middle wing of the Democratic Party, ladies and gentlemen. This is what’s going on,” Piker said.

This comes as anti-ICE protests continue outside Delaney Hall, where activists say detainees are being held in poor conditions and are not getting enough food. The Department of Public Safety denies these allegations.
Later in the broadcast, Piker accused Sherrill of helping to promote President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
“The issue is not far-left activists who continue to rage against ICE in New Jersey,” Piker said. “The real story is the appalling conditions inside this institution … and the governor is acting as if he has no power to stop it, and he is using the power he has to work alongside the MAGA organization alongside the Trump administration, because these are state troops on horseback.”

“These are state troopers who are harassing the people of New Jersey,” he added.
Piker also accused the authorities of mistreating journalists covering the protests.
“They’re doing Israeli army s—. It’s disgusting,” he said while discussing reports that an Associated Press photographer was injured while covering the protests.

The broadcaster also used the broadcast to criticize Democratic lawmakers on immigration policy.
“Democrats are fully engaged in this process,” Piker said, arguing that some members of the party have supported legislation and funding measures related to immigration enforcement.
“I want to change that system,” he added later. “Part of that is also focusing on the selection of people who are going to make a lot of noise.”

Later in the broadcast, Piker told viewers, “That’s what I’m trying to change.”
In recent months, Piker has traveled the country lobbying for candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America.
During a live broadcast on Sunday, he also voiced his support for billionaire presidential candidate Tom Steyer and quoted Mao Zedong, the founder of the Chinese Communist Party.
Piker has drawn scrutiny for his support of candidates and activism related to immigration policy.

Earlier this year, he campaigned in New Jersey for congressman Adam Hamamy, a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America who was publicly supported by Piker following media scrutiny of his background.
