God of War Laufey may arrive in the first half of 2027

Sony recently revealed God of War: Laufey, but new information is starting to paint a clearer picture of when players can finally hear the next chapter in the franchise. According to industry expert NateTheHate, the latest release window he heard points to launch sometime during the first half of 2027. Although Sony and Santa Monica Studio have not officially confirmed the date, the report indicates that the development may be more than many fans are expecting.
The claim also coincides with recent comments by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who pointed out that the lack of a release date should not be interpreted as a sign that the project is years away. Taken together, the reports suggest that Sony may still have a firm launch target in mind.
If the timeline holds, God of War: Laufey will arrive about four and a half years after God of War Ragnarök, which launched in November 2022. That would represent a shorter development cycle than many fans are accustomed to associate with modern PlayStation blockbuster games.
Faye steps out of the shadows
The biggest change in God of War: Laufey is its own character. For the first time, players will take control of Faye, also known as Laufey the Just. Although he was one of the most important characters in Norse history, his presence has been felt mostly through memories, stories, and the impact of his decisions on Kratos and Atreus.
This game puts him at the center of the narrative. An early gameplay video suggests that Santa Monica Studio is creating a combat system that is very different from Faye’s abilities. Unlike Kratos, whose fighting style revolves around brute force and powerful weapons, Faye seems to rely more on magic and the use of nature.
Players will reportedly be able to stop rivers, reshape the landscape, and use the terrain itself as part of battles. The result appears to be a faster and more agile fighting style that sets him apart from previous God of War characters.
The setting is equally impressive. The story takes place in a mysterious place known as Everywhen, an afterlife feature that seems to expand the franchise beyond the realms explored in Norse history.
A great legend could be on the horizon
Another detail that is causing excitement among fans is the possibility of new mythological influences. Rumors suggest that while Norse mythology will remain an important part of the experience, elements inspired by Egyptian mythology may also appear. If true, it could mark the beginning of a major expansion of the God of War universe and could set up future entries in the franchise.
Reaction to Faye as the lead actress has been mixed but mostly positive. Some fans are eager to finally learn more about one of the series’ most mysterious figures. Others remain attached to Kratos and are wary of moving away from the character that has defined the franchise for two decades.
Sony has reportedly assured players that Kratos remains an integral part of the series and is not being written out of future plans. For now, the release window for the first half of 2027 remains tentative. However, if the timeline is accurate, fans may not have to wait long to get an in-depth look at the game. The PlayStation Showcase or State of Play later this year could provide the next big update.
Until then, God of War: Laufey is shaping up to be the most anticipated upcoming PlayStation release.
