A new Google AI tool can translate at the speed of real conversations, allowing you to speak naturally with someone who speaks a different language than you.
Google recently introduced Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, a new audio model designed to make real-time multilingual conversations feel more natural. Unlike traditional translation systems that process speech in turn, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate continuously listens, translates and speaks, allowing conversations to flow with a few seconds of delay, mimicking natural speech patterns.
The model automatically detects spoken languages and supports more than 70, allowing thousands of language pairs within a single conversation. Google says the technology is now available to developers and partners, who can integrate it into meetings, social media and mobile apps.

What’s new in Gemini 3.5 Live Translate
The biggest change is how the translation takes place. Rather than waiting for a single speaker to finish before producing a response, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate performs continuous streaming translation. The result is a fluid conversation experience with fewer unpleasant pauses, interruptions and delays.
The model is designed for the realities of everyday communication. Google said it can work in noisy environments and is designed to handle background noise, overlapping voices and irregular speech patterns. That makes it ideal for many use cases, including customer support calls, guided tours, classes, ride-sharing services and live streaming.
Google also emphasizes the quality of speech. Instead of generating a standard artificial voice, the system tries to preserve the characteristics of the original speaker’s presentation, including pacing, intonation and emotional tone. This helps translated speech sound more natural and makes conversations easier to follow.
A new era of translation
The overarching goal of Gemini 3.5 Live is to move live interpretation beyond occasional demonstrations and daily interactions. By enabling near real-time multilingual conversations without requiring speakers to change their language, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate can make cross-language interactions easier for businesses, organizations and individuals.
This seems to herald a new era in translation and international communication, as many companies release products and services to make real-time translation available everywhere.
Last year, Apple released the AirPods Pro 3 with a feature titled Live Translation. Google Translate has been rolling out live headphone translation for Apple and Android devices since December, and T-Mobile is also testing AI-powered Live Translation calls. At CES in January, I wrote about handheld device which can translate voice conversations in real time into text, allowing me to speak to a woman in Polish, even though I don’t speak a word of Polish.
Gemini 3.5 Live is just the latest in a long line of AI-powered translation products. This growing trend reflects the desire to communicate effectively across cultures, allowing travel, language learning and understanding to be seamless.
