Intel is a company dedicated to the manufacture of semiconductors and integrated circuits. It was founded in 1968 by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce in Mountain View, California. Initially, they used the name NM Electronics, finally changing it a year later to Intel, which comes from INTegrated ELectronics.
They began by manufacturing microprocessors for calculators for a Japanese client, where they discovered it had more potential than expected. So much so that they bought back the rights from the company that had commissioned it, allowing them to launch the first Intel processor, the 4004, in 1971, with 23,000 transistors and 60,000 operations per second. Later, they released the 8008, which doubled the capabilities of its predecessor.
In 1981, Intel released the 8086 and 8088 processors. The latter was chosen by IBM for its PC, thus launching the entire IBM-compatible PC market. Intel continued working, releasing the 80286 a year later, which boasted 134,000 transistors. The 32-bit 80386 wasn’t released until 1985 and was included in the Compaq Deskpro 386. The 80486 appeared in 1989.
Intel launched the Pentium range in 1993, which multiplied the power of the last 486 by 5. Later, they launched the Pentium II, Pentium III, and Pentium 4. The Celeron was also born as a reduced version of these processors for less powerful tasks.
In more recent times, Intel launched the Pentium D, which already featured 64-bit architecture. From this point on, all processors would drop the “Pentium” moniker and be called Intel. Some of these models were the Intel Core Duo and Intel Core 2 Duo, named for their two cores. The single-core version was called the Intel Core Solo.
After the Intel Core Duo, the company adopted the naming convention we all know today, based on generations rather than simply changing the name. This led to the creation of the Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, and Intel Core i7, where the lower numbers were reserved for less demanding computers and the higher numbers for more demanding processes and workloads. Later, as the most powerful processor in the Intel lineup, they launched the Core i9.
Intel has also ventured into the world of graphics cards and, in recent years, has been working to launch a graphics card that can compete with current solutions from other manufacturers.
What type of products does Intel manufacture?
Intel is a semiconductor manufacturer that designs and produces its own processors. It manufactures processors for desktop and laptop PCs, and for several years it also manufactured and supplied processors for Mac computers. This was during the period when they abandoned PowerPC and Windows became part of the operating system for Apple’s Macintosh computers.
Intel is also a manufacturer of server processors, and its Xeon processors power servers for data centers and businesses. Intel Xeon processors are designed with instructions specifically for enterprise environments and offer enhanced security to protect data while delivering superior performance compared to Intel desktop processors.
Most Intel processors have integrated graphics, so for less demanding tasks, we can use the integrated graphics in desktop or laptop PCs. Now, Intel also manufactures dedicated graphics cards (GPUs ). Intel has developed a GPU called DG1, which has undergone initial testing, and is currently working on a second-generation GPU called DG2, which is much more powerful and designed to compete with current GPUs in the gaming market.
Intel has always manufactured its own processors in its own facilities, but recently Intel will commission future processors bearing its name from other semiconductor manufacturers, and will also open its factories to produce these same products for other clients. This represents a shift towards a new approach and a way to further maximize the profitability of its facilities worldwide.
