At the age of 14, he was forced to drop out of school because he couldn’t learn to read or write. Fifteen years later, he was one of the richest people in his city… How did he do it?

The protagonist of this story is Jeff Pearce, a successful British businessman who was born in the suburbs of Liverpool in 1953 and had to face great difficulties from a very young age.
Jeff lived with his parents and four siblings. His father was an alcoholic and had a careless attitude toward life, which forced his mother to make enormous efforts to support the family. Jeff suffered from dyslexia, making reading and writing extremely difficult for him. At the time, there was a great deal of ignorance and lack of understanding about this disorder, and his teacher believed the boy was just trying to be funny by reading words backward, so she punished him by making him wear a humiliating hat and sit for hours in a corner staring at the wall.
Due to the academic difficulties and bullying he faced because of his dyslexia, he had to drop out of school at the age of 14. His teacher, disappointed by Jeff’s attitude, told him:
“Nothing will ever go right for you in life. Teaching you was a waste of time, you’re a waste.”
According to Jeff himself in an interview with the BBC, these words were devastating for him and stayed with him for the rest of his life, making him feel like a fraud.

Away from school, he continued his activities as a merchant to earn some money.
At 17, thinking that no one would employ someone who didn’t even know how to write his own name, he decided to start his first business.
He moved from market stalls and established his own retail store, thus beginning his career as an entrepreneur.
Later, she ventured into the clothing industry through two different business concepts: Girls Talk, a fast-fashion retail phenomenon with stores in Liverpool and Chester; and Tickled Pink, a wholesale business that distributed her fashion designs to the country’s major boutique chains.
His businesses prospered rapidly, and, before he turned 30, he had already amassed a fortune of over £1 million.
Double life: between success and frustration
In contrast to his business success, Jeff led a life filled with frustration due to his illiteracy. His teacher’s words echoed in his head constantly, and he felt he didn’t deserve all he had achieved.
She felt ashamed for not knowing how to read or write, so she used various tricks to hide her secret.
His wife Gina accompanied him to meetings and took charge of reading forms and contracts, saying, “Don’t worry about this… you all keep talking while I do it.” And she would pass them to Jeff just to sign.
Similarly, Gina was his support at social gatherings and dinners with friends, helping him choose wines and dishes from the menu to avoid revealing that he couldn’t read.
Despite his wife’s efforts, one night Jeff’s greatest fear would come true…
His daughters asked him to read them a story before bed. He tried to make up the story based on the book’s illustrations, but one of them noticed and told him not to be silly, that he couldn’t read.
He insisted that he did know, but the girl had exposed him.
She said goodnight, went downstairs, and started to cry.
“I would have given all my riches at that moment to be able to read a story to my girls ,” Jeff said.
This was the life of this businessman: on the one hand, he enjoyed success, luxuries,s and riches; but, on the other hand, he felt like a failure due to his illiteracy.
However, in 1992, life would test his tenacity, and everything would change…
A new beginning
The economic recession hit hard, and Pearce lost everything overnight. He, his wife, and his daughters had to leave their beautiful home and give up the luxuries they had enjoyed for years.
Broke and drowning in debt, he sat on the bed on the verge of suicide and thought that this was his punishment for being a fraud and having built his wealth without deserving it.
Despite everything, he regained his strength and got back on his feet. He decided to start from scratch in the markets where his story began and managed to recover. Ten years later, his business empire was stronger than ever, owning huge department stores throughout Liverpool.
In 2002, he founded a new company: “Jeff’s of BoldStreet,” an independent premium boutique specializing in women’s clothing. The store was an immediate success, generating over £40,000 in revenue per week and breaking sales records during its first year in operation.
Thanks to his business success, he received the Independent Distributor of the Year award at the Drapers Awards, a recognition that filled him with pride and gave him the strength to open up to his family. After receiving the award, in the taxi on the way back to their hotel, Jeff confessed to his daughters that he couldn’t read or write. It was a very emotional and relieving confession that allowed him to lift a weight off his shoulders.
Example of personal growth
At 53 years old, he decided to confront his fear of writing and overcome his dyslexia. With great effort and dedication, he finally learned to read and write, proving to himself that he was capable of achieving anything he set his mind to.
After retiring from business, this successful entrepreneur began a new chapter in his life, visiting schools, colleges, and universities to deliver a message of self-improvement and inspire future generations.
